Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
In many rural communities across Nigeria, including Zango Local Government Area (LGA) in Katsina State, local governance is often poorly understood by the general population. Indigenous language radio has the potential to bridge this gap by providing vital information on governance, policies, and the role of local government in people's daily lives. By broadcasting in local languages, radio stations can effectively reach a broader audience, particularly those who may not be literate in the national languages. This study examines the role of indigenous language radio in promoting local governance awareness in Zango LGA, focusing on how radio programs inform the public about governance processes, their rights, and how they can engage with local government (Sulaimon & Umar, 2023; Usman & Hassan, 2024).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While indigenous language radio has the potential to enhance public awareness of local governance, there is limited research on its specific impact in rural areas such as Zango LGA. Many citizens remain unaware of the workings of local government and their rights, which can lead to disengagement and lack of civic participation. This study aims to assess the role of indigenous language radio in promoting local governance awareness and its effectiveness in fostering informed and active citizen participation in Zango LGA.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the role of indigenous language radio in promoting local governance awareness in Zango LGA.
2. To evaluate the effectiveness of indigenous language radio programs in increasing public participation in local governance in Zango LGA.
3. To explore the challenges and opportunities of using indigenous language radio for promoting local governance awareness in Zango LGA.
1.4 Research Questions
1. How does indigenous language radio promote local governance awareness in Zango LGA?
2. To what extent are indigenous language radio programs effective in increasing public participation in local governance in Zango LGA?
3. What challenges and opportunities exist in using indigenous language radio to promote local governance awareness in Zango LGA?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
1. Indigenous language radio significantly promotes local governance awareness in Zango LGA.
2. Indigenous language radio programs are effective in increasing public participation in local governance in Zango LGA.
3. The effectiveness of indigenous language radio in promoting local governance awareness is influenced by factors such as program content, accessibility, and community involvement.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the role of indigenous language radio in promoting local governance awareness, offering recommendations for improving governance-related programming. The findings will be useful for local government authorities, media practitioners, and civic organizations working to enhance public participation and governance in rural communities like Zango LGA.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to Zango Local Government Area in Katsina State and focuses on the role of indigenous language radio in promoting local governance awareness. It does not include other forms of media or other regions of the state.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
